Saskatoon is set to welcome the Brier in 2027, marking the 100th anniversary of the men’s curling championship. The grand celebration is scheduled to commence on February 26, 2027, at SaskTel Centre, marking the seventh occasion Saskatoon has been chosen as the Brier’s host city. Having previously hosted the Brier in 2004 for its 75th anniversary and in 2012, Saskatoon’s selection was officially announced by Curling Canada at a local Montana’s BBQ & Bar, the event’s title sponsor.
According to CurlSask executive director Steve Turner, Saskatchewan is the ideal location to honor the Brier’s centennial milestone, as curling holds significant cultural importance in the province. Turner emphasized the passionate and knowledgeable fan base in Saskatchewan, known for their unwavering support. The last time the national men’s curling championship was held in Saskatchewan was in 2024 in Regina, with Regina and Saskatoon collectively hosting the event 12 times and Saskatchewan teams claiming victory seven times.
The Brier’s last triumph in Saskatchewan dates back to 1980 when the Saskatoon-based team led by Rick Folk, along with Ron Mills, Tom Wilson, and Jim Wilson, clinched the championship. Mayor Cynthia Block expressed excitement at the opportunity to showcase Saskatoon and honor the province’s rich curling heritage during the Brier. Block highlighted the deep-rooted connection between individuals and their local rinks, emphasizing the significance of curling in rural Saskatchewan.
The successful bid to host the 2027 Brier was a joint effort by Discover Saskatoon and Saskatoon Destination Marketing Hotels Inc., with Discover Saskatoon serving as the city’s official destination marketing organization. The funding request of $350,000 made to city councillors earlier this year aimed to enhance the bid and potential economic benefits for the city. Discover Saskatoon estimates substantial direct business sales, provincial tax revenue, and hotel bookings resulting from the event.
Following the bid’s approval, Discover Saskatoon will provide detailed reports to city council regarding participation numbers, economic impact, and event budget specifics related to Saskatoon. The inaugural Brier took place in Toronto in March 1927, with Nova Scotia emerging victorious among eight competing teams. The winner of the 2027 Brier will represent Canada at the 2027 World Men’s Curling Championship. The upcoming 2026 Brier is scheduled to be held in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, starting on February 27.
