Sandy Brondello is poised to become the inaugural head coach of the Toronto Tempo basketball team. Following her tenure with the New York Liberty, where she guided the team to its first WNBA championship in 2024, Brondello’s contract was not renewed due to a season plagued by injuries culminating in an early playoff exit.
Brondello, who achieved a remarkable 107-53 record over four seasons with New York, making her the winningest coach in the franchise’s history, had also been considered for the head coaching position with the Dallas Wings. Additionally, the Seattle Storm is currently seeking a new head coach.
The announcement of Brondello’s new role was initially disclosed by The Next website. Prior to her time with the Liberty, Brondello steered the Phoenix Mercury to a championship during her eight-year stint with the team. Her success with the Mercury led to her recruitment by the Liberty in 2022 after she guided the Mercury to the WNBA Finals in 2021.
Despite New York’s loss in the 2023 finals to Las Vegas, they rebounded the following year, clinching the championship in a thrilling Game 5 overtime victory against Minnesota. The Toronto Tempo, an expansion team set to debut next season, will now benefit from Brondello’s wealth of coaching experience.
