“Russia’s Overnight Air Assault Leaves Devastation in Kyiv”

Russia conducted its most extensive overnight air assault of the conflict, resulting in a blaze at the main Ukrainian government building in Kyiv and claiming the lives of three individuals, including an infant found in the debris, Ukrainian officials disclosed on Sunday. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated via the Telegram messaging app that the government structure sustained damage from an enemy attack for the first time, affecting its upper levels and roof. Witnesses reported seeing flames engulf the top floor of the government building in the historic Pecherskyi district, with thick smoke billowing into the sky at dawn.

During the overnight onslaught, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia unleashed 805 drones and 13 missiles, with Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepting 751 drones and four missiles. This marked the highest number of drone deployments by Russia against Ukraine since the commencement of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Timur Tkachenko, the capital’s military administration head, confirmed the recovery of an infant’s body from the ruins in the Darnytskyi district, where a four-story residential building suffered damage. Additionally, a young woman lost her life in the same district located east of the Dnipro River. Emergency officials indicated that 18 individuals sustained injuries in the overnight assault, causing fires across the city.

Moscow refrained from immediate comments on the attacks, with both sides denying deliberate targeting of civilians in the strikes. However, casualties have been mounting since Russia initiated the full-scale invasion of Ukraine three and a half years ago.

In response to the devastation, Ukrainian Prime Minister Svyrydenko issued a call for increased weaponry and global action against the Russian aggressors. She emphasized the irreversible loss of lives incurred during the attacks, highlighting the ongoing terror and casualties inflicted on Ukraine’s populace.

Smoke emanated from residential structures, some with collapsed floors and damaged exteriors, as depicted in images shared by emergency officials on social media platforms.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed solidarity with Ukraine, affirming support through over $22 billion in military, humanitarian, and financial assistance, alongside sanctions on thousands of individuals and entities, and measures to curtail oil prices.

Kyiv’s military administrator, Tkachenko, condemned Russia’s deliberate targeting of civilian sites, as multiple explosions rocked Kremenchuk, affecting power supply and damaging a bridge over the Dnipro River. Further instances of infrastructure damage and fires in residential areas were reported in Kryvyi Rih and Odesa, prompting Poland to activate its air defense in response to potential aerial threats in western Ukraine.

This assault, the second major Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv within a fortnight, follows pleas from European leaders for Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek resolution to the conflict, with Ukraine’s allies committing to deploy troops as a support force post-conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has advocated for peace negotiations with Putin and urged U.S. President Donald Trump to impose stringent sanctions on Russia to compel an end to the war.
