The editor and publisher of the Marion County Record, Eric Meyer, shared in a recent interview how his newspaper stood up against adversity and emerged victorious. In 2023, the newspaper’s offices in rural Kansas were subjected to a controversial raid by local law enforcement, sparking concerns about press freedom.
After a prolonged legal battle, Marion County has now agreed to pay over $3 million in a court-approved settlement related to the raid, with the sheriff’s office issuing an official apology. Meyer emphasized the importance of standing up to bullies and not succumbing to intimidation tactics.
Tragically, following the raid, Meyer’s 98-year-old mother, Joan Meyer, who co-owned the newspaper and resided with him, passed away from sudden cardiac arrest. The stress induced by the raid is believed to have played a role in her untimely death.
The raid was conducted under the premise of investigating the newspaper for allegedly obtaining a local restaurateur’s driving record unlawfully. However, Meyer asserted that the newspaper had acted within legal boundaries, receiving information about the restaurateur’s driving history through a credible source. Despite having the information, the newspaper opted not to publish it, deeming it irrelevant to the public.
Furthermore, the raid coincided with the publication of an investigative piece on then-police chief Gideon Cody. Cody, who initially defended the raid, has since resigned and faces legal charges for allegedly interfering with a judicial process. Subsequent evaluations by special prosecutors concluded that the newspaper and its staff had committed no wrongdoing, highlighting flaws in the investigation that led to the raid.
As part of the settlement, Marion County will compensate the estate of Joan Meyer with $1 million, while Eric Meyer and others will receive a portion of the settlement. The agreement also mandated an apology from the sheriff’s office, acknowledging procedural errors in executing the warrants.
