The Recording Academy has made adjustments to its regulations for the upcoming 2026 Grammy Awards, introducing five new award categories. The academy revealed the addition of a best Asian pop music performance category, recognizing achievements in K-pop, J-pop, C-pop, and similar genres. Additionally, a new category for best traditional pop vocal performance has been created for artists whose music diverges from contemporary pop styles.
Another new category, best Latin song, will honor songwriters of Spanish-language songs. Changes have also been implemented in the R&B and folk categories. A new award for best R&B collaboration or duo/group performance has been introduced, alongside updates to the best R&B solo performance category. Similarly, the folk genre has undergone a transformation, with the best folk album category now termed best contemporary folk album, and a separate category for best traditional folk album has been added.
In a significant alteration, modifications have been made to the criteria for the best new artist category. Artists can now submit for the award up to four times, aiming to better represent the evolving music landscape. There is no set limit on previous releases, and a screening committee will assess whether an artist has achieved a significant impact in the music industry before the eligibility period. Notably, artists previously nominated for a Grammy are ineligible for consideration.
Furthermore, the Grammys will permit qualified members to vote in more categories. Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming 2027 Grammy Awards, highlighting the changes as a reflection of the diverse music industry and its innovators. Mason anticipates a remarkable year ahead, showcasing the progress and diversity within the music community.
