“Record-Breaking El Niño Sets Stage for Climate Impacts”

The highly anticipated El Niño has arrived and is already proving to be significant. Earlier this year, climate experts predicted the development of an El Niño in the central Pacific region. Over time, models increasingly suggested a strong or “super” El Niño, though it was cautioned that certainty was premature.

In June, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) confirmed the presence of warmer conditions in the specific Pacific Ocean area known as Niño 3.4, meeting the criteria for an El Niño with temperatures exceeding 0.5 C above average. Presently, ocean temperatures are nearly 2 C above average, setting a record high for this time of year.

Climate scientist Zeke Hausfather mentioned that temperatures in the traditional Niño 3.4 region are above 2 C, approaching the threshold for a very strong or “super” El Niño. It is only early July, and conditions are already indicative of a potent El Niño.

El Niño and its counterpart La Niña are part of the natural cycle known as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), affecting the Pacific Ocean region. While La Niña brings cooler temperatures, El Niño brings warmer conditions. Forecasts suggest that the El Niño peak may occur in October, with some models indicating a later peak in November or December.

The most robust El Niño in recent memory occurred in 2015-2016, with an ocean temperature anomaly of approximately 2.75 C. NOAA meteorologist Nat Johnson noted the swift transition from La Niña to El Niño this year, posing questions about the rapid change in conditions.

Hausfather expressed surprise at models predicting a peak El Niño temperature around 3.6 C above average, surpassing historical El Niño records by a significant margin. The role of climate change in these extreme conditions remains uncertain, with ongoing scientific discussions.

One critical concern raised by Hausfather is food security in tropical regions, expected to face drought due to El Niño. In Canada, impacts will be felt during winter, bringing milder temperatures but also dry conditions, heightening wildfire risks in Western Canada.

Preparations for substantial impacts from El Niño are advised, as it poses challenges for agriculture, natural ecosystems, and ocean environments.
