Authorities responded to reports of Kap’s Cafe in the Newton area of Surrey being shot at around 4 a.m. PT. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the staff present during the shooting.
Kap’s Cafe, owned by renowned Indian comedian and TV personality Kapil Sharma, has faced similar incidents in the past. While the Surrey Police Service has not officially confirmed the connection to extortion, they believe it to be a probable cause. Investigations by the department and the Provincial Extortion Task Force are ongoing regarding previous attacks on the cafe.
The cafe initially experienced a shooting incident in July, shortly after its opening, followed by a second occurrence in August. Police are aware of a video circulating online showing multiple shots being fired at the cafe from a moving vehicle. Additionally, claims from individuals affiliated with the Bishnoi gang have surfaced regarding the latest attack.
The scene at Kap’s Cafe on Thursday morning depicted shattered windows and bullet-ridden storefront, with police conducting investigations inside the premises. Passersby, like Mike Grieve, expressed dismay over the repeated targeting of the cafe and the impact on the owner, Kapil Sharma, a prominent figure in the Indian entertainment industry.
Despite the unsettling incidents, neighboring businesses like Brown Blendz Barbershop continue operations, with some residents acknowledging the unfortunate trend of such shootings becoming a “new normal” in the area. Surrey MLA Harman Bhangu highlighted the severity of the situation, urging authorities to address the escalating violence linked to criminal elements in the community.
