Poland’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, condemned the recent explosion on a critical railway line used for shipments to Ukraine, labeling it as an unprecedented act of sabotage. Authorities are currently probing whether the blast that occurred on Sunday along the railway connecting Warsaw to southeastern Poland has ties to Russia, Belarus, or their allies.
Tusk expressed determination in capturing the perpetrators behind the sabotage, emphasizing the significance of the affected line for transporting aid and weaponry to Ukraine. Polish officials confirmed that an explosive device was detonated on a section of the track between Warsaw and Lublin, causing damage to overhead cables along the same route, both incidents likely being acts of sabotage.
NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte, mentioned close collaboration with Polish authorities as they await the investigation’s results. Western officials have accused Russia and its affiliates of orchestrating numerous attacks and incidents across Europe post the Ukraine invasion to destabilize support for Ukraine and sow fear among European nations.
Poland previously reported shooting down Russian drones entering its airspace with NATO’s assistance. The country’s Security Services Minister, Tomasz Siemoniak, highlighted the high probability of the railway incidents being orchestrated by foreign services. Investigations indicated that an explosive device caused the railway track damage near the village of Mika, southeast of Warsaw, with no reported injuries among passengers or staff.
Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz disclosed plans for the army to inspect the 120-kilometer Warsaw-Lublin-Hrubieszów line, connecting Poland’s capital to Ukraine. Another train on the same line, traveling from Świnoujście to Rzeszów, was halted near Puławy due to damaged overhead electrical cables, affecting 475 passengers. Finnish President Alexander Stubb urged European nations to maintain composure amid alleged Russian disruptions, cautioning against overreactions to these incidents.
Stubb emphasized Russia’s dual warfare strategies, involving kinetic warfare in Ukraine and hybrid tactics in Europe, blurring the lines between war and peace. Russia has consistently denied allegations of sabotage in incidents like drone intrusions near airports and cable severances in European waters.
