A visit to the Abby Lee Dance Company was filled with emotions, ballet costumes, and mothers arguing over their young daughters’ positions in the front row. The reality TV show “Dance Moms” from the 2010s showcased a group of talented young dancers and their overly dramatic mothers navigating the pressures of training and competing.

However, the true star of the show was always Abby Lee Miller, renowned for critiquing young girls’ dance moves and ranking them weekly on a pyramid from best to worst. Some of Miller’s memorable lines included “save your tears for the pillow” and “I wasn’t put on this Earth to make her feel special.”

Nearly seven years after the series concluded, a parody musical based on “Dance Moms” is in the works. Titled “The Pyramid: An Unauthorized ‘Dance Moms’ Musical,” the concept originated from college friends James Stryska and Isabel Grace Blankenship during a visit to a thrift store in Greensboro, N.C.

Their musical venture began with their original song, “My Little Kendall,” which gained over five million views on TikTok, drawing support from former cast members of “Dance Moms.” The project also attracted the attention of L.A.-based producer Logan Clark, who previously worked on the show.

Clark, who described himself as the show’s “pseudo-husband,” recognized the theatrical potential of “Dance Moms” and saw the opportunity for a musical adaptation. The production aims to capture the essence of the show’s drama, talent, and iconic pyramid rankings.

Even after the show’s conclusion, “Dance Moms” remains a cultural phenomenon, with clips and soundbites going viral on platforms like TikTok. Stars like Maddie Ziegler and JoJo Siwa have transitioned to successful careers post-“Dance Moms,” while Abby Lee Miller made headlines for legal issues.

The enduring appeal of “Dance Moms” lies in its portrayal of intense competition, a theme resonating with today’s social media-driven culture. The creators of the parody musical aim to highlight the complex relationships among the cast members while delivering the quotes and chaos that fans expect.

Documenting their journey on social media and crowdfunding for the project, the team behind the musical seeks to bring “Dance Moms” back into the spotlight and onto the stage, celebrating the intricate dynamics of mother-daughter relationships portrayed in the show.
