“Own a Piece of History: RCMP Horse Auction Now Open”

Share

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is well-known for its horse breeding program that produces black Hanoverians for the Musical Ride. While not every foal meets the standards, horse enthusiasts now have the chance to own a piece of Canadian history as the RCMP stables launch their annual horse auction through the Government of Canada’s online auction platform, GCSurplus.

Sixteen horses are available for bidding, starting at $5,000. Additionally, over 70 doses of horse semen for artificial insemination breeding are up for auction. These horses are described as well-bred and personable by Sgt. Sarah Parent, an instructor with the Musical Ride.

The Musical Ride has been a significant part of Canadian culture since its inception in 1901, showcasing mounted officers performing intricate drills set to music. The RCMP has maintained its equestrian legacy through this program, with the horses selected for their calm demeanor, size, shape, and solid black coat.

Not all horses bred at the RCMP farm in Pakenham, Ont., meet the performance standards, but they excel in various equestrian disciplines. The RCMP highlighted the exceptional temperament, athleticism, and lineage of their Hanoverians. Among the horses up for sale are Vimy, a confident filly, Bravo, a stallion with remarkable movement, and Legal, a striking mare no longer suitable for the Musical Ride due to physical limitations.

The auction will close on October 7 and 8, with proceeds reinvested into the RCMP’s breeding program. The auction includes frozen artificial insemination breeding doses from sires Earl, High Spirits, and Morricone III, with bidding starting at $100. By owning one of these horses, individuals become part of a tradition dating back to 1876.

Overall, the auction presents an opportunity for horse enthusiasts to acquire these esteemed RCMP horses and support the continuation of the RCMP’s esteemed breeding program.
