An Ontario school trustee targeted for dismissal by the province’s education minister has officially stepped down. Mark Watson, a member of the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, participated in a trip to Italy along with three other trustees to purchase art valued at $100,000 for the board, costing $45,000.
This trip, deemed controversial, is among the instances highlighted by Ontario Education Minister Paul Calandra, indicating the mismanagement of public funds in certain school boards and the necessity for governance reforms. While three of the trustees reimbursed their expenses from the trip, Calandra stated that Watson failed to fully repay his share, leaving a remaining balance of over $12,000.
Calandra introduced a bill on Monday specifically aimed at dismissing Watson from his trustee position and preventing him from holding any similar role on an Ontario school board until 2030. In response, Calandra expressed regret that legislative action was required to prompt Watson to take appropriate action.
The bill, as per Calandra, signifies the government’s commitment to upholding accountability and integrity within the education sector. He emphasized that Watson’s outstanding debt to the school board must be settled promptly, highlighting the funds’ intended purpose of enhancing student achievement rather than funding extravagant overseas trips for disconnected board members.
Despite the absence of a response from Watson to requests for comment, the board confirmed his resignation on Friday.
