“Ontario Cracks Down on Ticket Scalpers Flouting Price Regulations”

The Ontario government has initiated actions against ticket scalpers and resale platforms to ensure compliance with recent regulations that limit ticket resale prices to face value. Despite the regulations, some platforms continue to list tickets well above their original prices.

Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement Stephen Crawford stated in an interview with CBC News that notifications of inspections were sent out to resellers last week, with inspections currently ongoing. The crackdown targets various resellers, including ticket brokers and major companies like StubHub and SeatGeek.

The regulations, part of Ontario’s provincial budget, aim to prevent the sale of tickets at prices higher than their initial purchase cost. Consequently, FIFA has removed resale World Cup tickets for upcoming Toronto games, and Ticketmaster has adjusted its platform to prevent tickets from being listed above face value.

This enforcement campaign may involve contacting resellers for business practice inquiries, requesting relevant records, conducting site visits, and enforcing penalties or charges. Violations may result in fines ranging from $3,000 to $250,000, according to the minister’s office.

Some companies, such as StubHub, are still selling tickets above face value. While these companies claim to be working toward compliance, discrepancies persist between listed ticket values and actual checkout prices. StubHub, in particular, is seeking clarity on whether the price cap applies to pre-existing listings.

Despite challenges in ensuring compliance, Minister Crawford emphasizes collaboration with companies for a smooth transition. However, he warns of potential penalties for non-compliance if companies fail to adhere to the regulations promptly.

Vass Bednar from the Canadian SHIELD Institute acknowledges the complexities of compliance adjustments but stresses the need for swift enforcement to address public concerns regarding inflated ticket prices. While concerns over a potential black market persist, experts believe the new regulations will deter widespread price gouging in ticket resale markets.
