Former U.S. President Barack Obama has enlisted a lineup of prominent artists to perform at the inaugural event of his new cultural hub. Iconic musicians such as Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend, Bono and the Edge from U2, Eddie Vedder, and Bruce Springsteen are set to grace the stage during the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago’s South Side. The event, which will be livestreamed, is scheduled for June 18 at noon ET, a day before it opens to the public on Juneteenth, a U.S. federal holiday.
The current U.S. President, Donald Trump, is not expected to attend the event. Trump has been occupied with the Freedom 250 program this summer, commemorating the country’s 250th birthday. Notably, a Freedom 250 UFC event was hosted at the White House on Trump’s 80th birthday, where fighter Josh Hokit made controversial remarks about Michelle Obama. Critics have accused Trump of using official events to promote his political agenda, particularly by labeling celebrations as rallies and bypassing established committees like America 250.
Amidst the ongoing festivities, several performers have withdrawn from anniversary events associated with Trump, citing concerns over political affiliations. Notably, artists such as Bret Michaels, the Commodores, Fab Morvan, Young MC, and Martina McBride have canceled their appearances, expressing discomfort with the event’s evolving nature.
Despite these developments, artists like Flo Rida and Vanilla Ice remain committed to performing at the upcoming events. Trump, in response to the cancellations, suggested canceling the original event concept and announced plans to headline a rally on the National Mall on June 24.
In contrast, America 250 is proceeding with its own celebrations, including the America’s Block Party concert on July 4, featuring artists like the Smashing Pumpkins, Queen Latifah, and Chris Stapleton. The opening of Obama’s center follows a recent court order for the removal of Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center’s facade, a move that has sparked controversy and legal battles.
The parallel events hosted by Obama and Trump reflect a potential competition for the spotlight, with Obama’s global brand and cultural significance contrasting with Trump’s controversial leadership. Despite criticisms over the Obama Presidential Center’s design and facilities, it is expected to attract a significant number of visitors annually, offering a diverse range of amenities and attractions.
