“New ‘Ballista Spider’ in Australia Propels Prey with Silk Trap”

A newfound spider species found in the tropical rainforests of Australia has astonished scientists with its unique hunting method that propels prey into the air using a silk trap loaded with spring tension. The spider, known as the “ballista spider,” constructs a cone-shaped snare to launch green tree ants into its web, resembling the ancient Roman ballista weapon.

Discovered by researcher Greg Anderson in 2022, the spider caught the attention of a team from Macquarie University in 2023. With the aid of high-speed cameras, the researchers observed and documented the spiders’ hunting behavior over a ten-day period, unveiling their rapid and efficient prey capture technique.

Measuring between three to five millimeters in length, these nocturnal spiders spend their days concealed under leaves and emerge at sunset to construct elaborate traps beneath their webs. The spiders use silk tension lines to create a cone-shaped structure that, when triggered by a struggling ant, releases stored energy, launching the insect into the air and directly into the waiting predator’s web.

The researchers noted that the green tree ants were quickly attracted to the silk trap, indicating a specialized lure that specifically targets this species. Ajay Narendra, one of the lead researchers, believes this hunting strategy evolved as a means to capture the formidable green tree ants without direct confrontation.

Further analysis of the spider silk will be conducted to identify potential pheromones used in this prey specialization. Saad Bhamla, an associate professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder, suggests that the ants’ aggressive nature and territorial behavior could play a role in how the spiders target their prey.

The launch mechanism of the ballista spider subjects the ants to extreme G-forces, surpassing those experienced by jet pilots. This hunting tactic sets it apart from the slingshot spider, which utilizes a similar strategy but in a more active form. The ballista spider’s ability to store energy in its silk trap allows it to launch prey with significant force while maintaining a safe distance.

The discovery of this unique hunting behavior highlights the ongoing revelations in nature and the endless possibilities for further exploration and understanding of the natural world.
