Susan Petley experienced a mix of emotions as she crossed the stage during the graduation ceremony at St. Michael’s Adult Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. It was a moment she had longed for, but it was bittersweet. Petley, tearful and overwhelmed, described feeling a blend of hurt, anger, and love that culminated in a heartfelt ovation in the packed gymnasium.
She stood in for her late daughter, Bethany Anne Coupe, who had passed away from cancer in April, to accept her high school diploma. Holding onto her daughter Cynthia by her side, Petley expressed immense pride tinged with sorrow at Bethany’s absence on this significant occasion.
Bethany, aged 35, had faced health challenges for years, complicating her academic journey. Despite being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given a bleak prognosis, she persevered by studying from her hospital bed with the support of St. Michael’s staff. Initially puzzled by her daughter’s determination, Petley later understood that Bethany’s motivation stemmed from a desire to graduate and present her mother with a precious gift.
Bethany had aspirations of furthering her education at St. Clair College to pursue a career aiding children or animals. While Petley and Cynthia received the diploma on Bethany’s behalf, six siblings sat in the front row, eagerly anticipating their own graduation moment as a family accomplishment.
Among the siblings was Rodas Tesfalem Arey, who, along with her family, had relocated from Sudan to Windsor. Their Eritrean parents witnessed all their children graduating in succession, a proud moment for the entire family. Each sibling expressed joy and pride, with plans ranging from becoming mechanics, a personal support worker, a pilot, to a pharmacist technician.
Reflecting on the evening filled with emotions, Petley emphasized the importance of perseverance and determination, inspired by her daughter’s unwavering resolve. She encouraged others to pursue their goals relentlessly, drawing strength from Bethany’s legacy.
