Microsoft Introduces Xbox ROG Ally Handhelds

Share

Months following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, Microsoft has unveiled its own pair of handheld gaming devices: the Xbox ROG Ally and the more robust Xbox ROG Ally X. These new offerings, developed in collaboration with PC manufacturer Asus, are reminiscent of PC handhelds like the Steam Deck, providing a broader game selection and customization options compared to traditional consoles.

Despite their impressive computing capabilities, the launch of the Xbox ROG Allys comes at a challenging time for Xbox fans, with rising subscription costs and the cancellation of highly anticipated games due to company-wide layoffs at Microsoft.

The Xbox ROG Ally, priced at $799, is $100 more expensive than the Switch 2, while the enhanced Xbox ROG Ally X carries a price tag of $1,299, offering a faster processor, increased memory, and double the storage capacity at 1 terabyte. These devices, bearing the “Republic of Gamers” (ROG) branding from Asus, are optimized for gaming experiences on the go.

Unlike the Switch 2, the Xbox ROG Ally is not a compact version of the traditional Xbox Series console but rather a miniature PC running Windows 11 tailored for Xbox’s PC marketplace. This design allows for compatibility with most new Xbox games and the flexibility to play PC games from various digital platforms like Epic Games and Steam that are compatible with Windows 11.

The Xbox ROG Ally boasts a stunning display, powerful speakers, and controls that mirror a standard Xbox controller, offering enhanced gameplay comfort for action-oriented games compared to the Switch 2’s smaller controls. However, its bulkier design with substantial handles makes it less portable than its competitors.

Microsoft aims to deliver seamless PC gaming experiences for both casual players and enthusiasts with the Xbox ROG Ally. While performance on recommended games like Forza Horizon 5 and Fortnite is commendable, the device struggles with more demanding 3D titles, indicating limitations compared to traditional PCs or consoles.

Targeting a niche market of dedicated gamers, the Xbox ROG Ally series caters to enthusiasts seeking high-end performance, distinguishing itself as a premium option within the handheld gaming sector. Despite its premium features, buyers may still find themselves torn between the Xbox ROG Ally and the Nintendo Switch 2 during the upcoming holiday season, highlighting the device’s unique position in the gaming landscape.
