Sam Rivers, a co-founder and bassist of the nu metal group Limp Bizkit, passed away at the age of 48 on Saturday, as confirmed by his bandmates in a social media announcement. Lead vocalist Fred Durst, guitarist Wes Borland, drummer John Otto, and DJ Lethal paid tribute to Rivers in a heartfelt message shared on Instagram Saturday evening.

Describing Rivers as much more than just a bass player, the band members praised his exceptional musical talent and described him as the driving force behind their songs, bringing a unique magic and rhythm that left an indelible mark. Limp Bizkit had been preparing to kick off their Gringo Papi tour across Latin America on November 29, but it remained uncertain whether the tour would proceed without Rivers.

DJ Lethal, also known as Leor Dimant, expressed gratitude for Rivers’ musical contributions, charity work, and friendships, urging fans to honor his legacy by listening to his basslines and respecting his family’s privacy during this difficult time. The band, recognized for blending rap and rock elements, was established in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1994, achieving mainstream success with albums like “Significant Other” and “Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavoured Water.”

While details surrounding Rivers’ passing were not disclosed, reports indicate that he had battled liver disease, leading him to temporarily leave the band in 2015. Following a successful liver transplant in 2018, Rivers returned to the stage. In an interview for the book “Raising Hell: Backstage Tales from the Lives of Metal Legends,” Rivers shared his journey of overcoming alcohol-related health issues and receiving a life-saving transplant.

Born on September 2, 1977, in Jacksonville, Rivers’ final performances with Limp Bizkit were at the Leeds and Reading Festivals in late August. His bandmates fondly remembered him as a remarkable individual whose spirit would endure through their music and memories. They expressed deep appreciation for the moments shared with Rivers and vowed that his music would resonate eternally.

The legacy of Sam Rivers, both as a musician and a person, was honored by his bandmates in a touching tribute that captured the essence of his irreplaceable presence within Limp Bizkit.
