Members of the Heiltsuk Nation in Bella Bella, British Columbia, are rejoicing over a rare occurrence – the birth of a baby on native land. Adding to the significance of the event, the delivering doctor was also a member of the Heiltsuk community.
Located on Campbell Island approximately 480 kilometers northwest of Vancouver, Bella Bella lacks the necessary facilities for childbirth, often requiring expectant parents to travel to more equipped medical centers prior to their due dates. However, Nicole Johnson unexpectedly went into labor at 34 weeks on a Sunday, with adverse weather conditions preventing air ambulance access and ferry bookings fully occupied.
Dr. Don Wilson, an obstetrician-gynecologist from the Heiltsuk Nation, was at Comox Valley Hospital in Comox, British Columbia, when he received a call for an obstetrical emergency in Bella Bella, his own birthplace. Swiftly preparing for the lack of specific delivery equipment at Bella Bella Hospital, Wilson, accompanied by his anesthesiologist partner, rushed to the location via helicopter.
The team at ƛ̓uxválásu̓ilas Heiltsuk Hospital had to perform a C-section, utilizing the trauma bay as the hospital lacked an operating room. Despite the makeshift arrangements, the procedure went smoothly, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby, Anthony Bennett Johnson, at 1:35 a.m.
Max Johnson, Nicole’s uncle, expressed the family’s elation at having the baby born in Bella Bella, highlighting the significance of a Heiltsuk doctor overseeing the delivery. This event marked the first Heiltsuk baby born in the local hospital in around 13 years, with past discontinuations of deliveries due to changes in training processes for family physicians.
Reflecting on the emotional importance of a Heiltsuk baby being born in their nation, Wilson emphasized the deep connection First Nations people have to their lands and territories. He encouraged more Indigenous individuals to pursue healthcare professions, emphasizing the need for a robust public healthcare system and support for rural providers.
The joy and positivity surrounding Anthony’s birth have been palpable, with the event seen as a healing moment for both the community and the Heiltsuk Nation.
