“Heated Rivalry,” the TV series based on the bestselling book by Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid, has become a sensation online.
The plot revolves around two closeted professional hockey players, Shane Hollander (played by Hudson Williams) and Ilya Rozanov (played by Connor Storrie), who are forced into a rivalry from the moment they are drafted. Their competitive tension is mixed with a secret romantic relationship while maintaining a facade of animosity in public. However, their bond is hindered by the prevalent homophobia in their sport and Rozanov’s Russian background.
Apart from the show’s steamy narrative, much attention has been drawn to its Canadian origins, as it is written and directed by Jacob Tierney (“Letterkenny, Shoresy”) and produced by Crave.
From its modest budget to the cast and music selections, many elements of the series exhibit a distinct Canadian flair. Fans have been eager to highlight that although HBO Max distributes the show in the U.S. and Australia, it is not an HBO production.
The series features a soundtrack reminiscent of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, with several Canadian tracks enhancing pivotal moments. According to Spotify Canada, streaming numbers have surged, with tracks from Canadian artists experiencing significant spikes in streams and playlist adds following their appearances in the show.
The first season of “Heated Rivalry” includes a range of Canadian songs that complement key plot developments, from Feist’s “Sealion” to the Souljazz Orchestra’s “Serenity.” These tunes set the tone for emotional conversations and intimate scenes throughout the series.
