An extradition hearing is scheduled to commence in Scotland for the individuals accused in the tragic death of a restaurateur in southwestern Ontario in August 2023. Through a recent investigation by CBC News, fresh details have come to light. New photographs of the three suspects linked to the killing of Sharif Rahman in Owen Sound have surfaced following CBC’s access to Scottish court documents and the use of information from affidavits provided by Canadian law enforcement to uncover social media profiles.

Previously, visuals of the accused individuals were limited to blurry police handout images. These images depicted two figures, one in a blue T-shirt and the other in orange, seen sprinting down Owen Sound’s primary thoroughfare captured by a surveillance camera. Additionally, there was a snapshot of a grey Ford Escape speeding away – the vehicle used in their escape.

In December 2024, authorities announced the arrest of three suspects in Edinburgh, providing minimal information beyond their identities and ages. The accused, identified as Robert Evans (25), his father Robert Busby Evans (47), and his uncle Barry Evans (54), are facing charges including manslaughter and being accessories after the fact. They remain in custody in Scotland awaiting the extradition hearing set to commence on October 20 at the request of Canada.

By delving into social media profiles and conducting geolocation verification of images, the CBC News investigation managed to unearth photographs of the trio. These newly discovered visuals complement existing knowledge about the suspects, shedding light on their activities in Canada and the manner of their return to the U.K.

None of the accused individuals have entered a plea, and the allegations against them are yet to be tried in court. Despite attempts to reach out to their legal representatives and immediate families, no responses were received by CBC News.

The heartbreaking incident unfolded outside Rahman’s restaurant in Owen Sound, where he was found severely injured after confronting a group of diners attempting to leave without paying. The altercation turned fatal, leading to Rahman’s passing in a London hospital a week later.

Robert Evans Jr. is alleged to have delivered the blow that caused Rahman’s collapse, while his uncle Barry Evans faces charges for aiding the former’s escape and transportation. Robert Evans Sr., not present at the scene, has also been charged as an accessory for facilitating his son’s departure to the U.K.

The Evans family entered Canada using false names on U.K. passports in June 2023, engaging in a cash-only business called Total Paving during their stay. They were identified as part of the U.K.’s “traveller” community, known for operating driveway repair scams worldwide.

The extradition process is anticipated to be prolonged, as noted by immigration lawyer Richard Kurland, emphasizing the complexities involved in extraditing individuals from another country. The Owen Sound community continues to mourn Rahman’s untimely death, expressing a desire for justice to be served despite the ongoing legal proceedings.

Rahman’s widow remains hopeful that the perpetrators will be held accountable, emphasizing the family’s enduring faith in the pursuit of justice.
