Lululemon Athletica Inc. is entrusting its future to a former Nike executive amid ongoing criticism of its management and performance. The Vancouver-based athleisure retailer revealed on Wednesday that Heidi O’Neill will take over as the new chief executive officer on September 8 and will also join the board.
According to the company, O’Neill was selected for her extensive experience, track record of implementing groundbreaking ideas at scale, and her ability to drive change and growth effectively. Marti Morfitt, chair of Lululemon’s executive board, praised O’Neill as an inspirational leader and a skilled brand strategist with a unique talent for envisioning and executing brand transformations.
O’Neill’s appointment comes at a challenging time for Lululemon, facing stiff competition in the athleisure market while dealing with shareholder concerns, including from the company’s founder Chip Wilson, over its market positioning and product offerings.
Following the departure of CEO Calvin McDonald in December, interim co-CEOs Meghan Frank and André Maestrini have been leading the company until O’Neill assumes her role. The company highlighted O’Neill’s successful tenure at Nike, where she played a key role in scaling up the brand, as well as her marketing experience with Levi Strauss & Co. and board positions at Spotify Technology and Hyatt Hotels.
In her statement, O’Neill expressed her admiration for Lululemon as an iconic brand with a strong customer base, innovative product philosophy, and global growth potential. She aims to build on these strengths by driving product innovation, enhancing brand relevance, and expanding market reach.
While O’Neill was not initially on Wilson’s list of recommended executives for Lululemon, industry analysts view her appointment as a sensible choice given the need for cultural revitalization within the company. Neil Saunders of GlobalData believes that O’Neill’s background in activewear and customer-centric companies positions her well to lead Lululemon towards a new era of growth and innovation.
