Flavor Flav, aged 66, experienced a thrill hitting speeds of 106 kilometers per hour, sparking his interest in sliding sports. The iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and founding member of Public Enemy has now joined forces with the United States bobsled and skeleton program. USA Bobsled and Skeleton recently introduced Flav as their official hype man following his time at the 2002 Olympic track in Utah.
Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., expressed his excitement about the partnership, emphasizing that it surpasses the iconic film “Cool Runnings.” His recent experience involved sliding down the Park City track in a bobsled and later attempting skeleton racing, a high-speed sport where athletes can reach speeds over 129 km/h.
Despite initial safety concerns urging him to start from a lower point on the track, Flav insisted on a more challenging start position. Eventually, he achieved a speed of 108 km/h on his second run, a remarkable feat for a newcomer to the sport. U.S. skeleton athlete Dan Barefoot praised Flav’s adventurous spirit and natural talent, noting his exceptional skills in what is typically a demanding sport.
Flav’s involvement in sports extends beyond sliding events; he has been seen at various sporting occasions, including the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and performances during Super Bowl weeks. His support for Olympians, such as discus thrower Veronica Fraley, and his role as the official hype man for the U.S. women’s water polo team at the Paris Olympics highlight his passion for sports and athletes.
The team members have embraced Flav’s presence, with many forming personal connections with him and enjoying shared experiences like attending a Maroon 5 concert. Looking ahead, Flav plans to participate in a slider camp in Park City post-Olympics. USA Bobsled and Skeleton CEO Aron McGuire expressed enthusiasm about Flav’s sponsorship, highlighting his genuine love for sports and the team’s values of determination and national pride.
The addition of Flavor Flav as an official sponsor and hype man is set to bring a new level of excitement and energy to USA Bobsled and Skeleton, uniting fans and athletes alike in their shared passion for the sport.
