Veteran actress Prunella Scales, renowned for her role as the sharp-tongued Sybil Fawlty in the beloved British sitcom “Fawlty Towers,” passed away at the age of 93 due to dementia, as confirmed by her children on Tuesday. Scales peacefully departed at her residence in London on Monday, where she had been residing despite her retirement from a distinguished acting career spanning nearly seven decades. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, shared that she was engrossed in watching “Fawlty Towers” just a day before her demise.
Scales’ acting journey featured early appearances in films like the 1952 adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice” and the 1954 comedy “Hobson’s Choice,” followed by a transition to television with the 1960s sitcom “Marriage Lines.” In “Fawlty Towers,” she portrayed the frustrated yet commanding spouse of the inept Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese, who struggled to manage a seaside hotel, leading to comedic chaos.
The sitcom, created by Cleese and his then-wife Connie Booth, only produced 12 episodes between 1975 and 1979 but has since been hailed as one of the finest British shows and a comedic masterpiece. Cleese fondly remembered Scales as a brilliant comic actress and a delightful individual, praising her flawless performances in “Fawlty Towers.”
Apart from her iconic role in “Fawlty Towers,” Scales also took on royal portrayals, embodying Queen Elizabeth II in “A Question of Attribution” and staging a one-woman show as Queen Victoria. Her personal life intertwined with her professional success as she enjoyed a 61-year marriage to fellow actor Timothy West, who passed away at age 90 in November 2024.
Scales’ battle with vascular dementia, diagnosed in 2013, was candidly showcased in the travel show “Great Canal Journeys,” which she co-hosted with her late husband West. The program received acclaim for its honest depiction of Scales’s journey with dementia. She is survived by her sons, stepdaughter Juliet West, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The esteemed actress leaves behind a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry, with her endearing performances and memorable contributions to British television cherished by audiences worldwide.
