The skies over Pokrovsk, a contested city in Ukraine, are filled with drones, making it risky for military convoys to move through the area. Amid dense fog, a video surfaced on social media showing what seems to be a small group of Russian soldiers navigating Pokrovsk on motorcycles and in a car with missing doors.
Russian military bloggers shared a brief clip offering a glimpse into the strategic battleground of Pokrovsk, resembling a scene from a dystopian movie. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that adverse weather conditions are aiding Russia in its attempts to infiltrate the city after a prolonged push.
Front-line maps indicate that Pokrovsk is teetering on the edge of falling, with some experts predicting Russia’s eventual capture of both Pokrovsk and the nearby city of Myrnohrad. Ukrainian drone operator, known as Goose, revealed that the increased presence of Russian forces has altered the dynamics in the area.
The city, once home to 60,000 residents, now faces encirclement as Russia aims to tighten its grip by surrounding it from multiple directions. With several hundred Russian troops already present in Pokrovsk, Moscow seeks to establish offensive positions to control supply lines and advance further north into the Donetsk region.
The urban environment of Pokrovsk remains a grey zone where control fluctuates between Russia and Ukraine, with constant shifts in the front line. Both sides rely on drones for surveillance and reconnaissance, forcing troops to adapt their logistics. Ukrainian infantry now cover long distances on foot to avoid drawing attention, as armoured vehicles are vulnerable targets.
The outnumbered Ukrainian forces in Pokrovsk maintain air superiority through the use of glide bombs but face challenges in holding strategic positions. The city’s basements have been repurposed into military strongholds, emphasizing the importance of retaining control. Despite evacuation warnings, around 1,000 residents remain in the devastated city, defying orders to leave their homes.
Efforts to protect civilians amidst the ongoing conflict are complicated by the precarious situation in Pokrovsk, where the population faces immense risks. The struggle for control over the city intensifies as both Ukrainian and Russian forces maneuver in the volatile region.
