Veteran journalist and current host of “Metro Morning” on the radio, David Common, has been named as the new host of “CBC Morning Live,” replacing Heather Hiscox, as announced by the public broadcaster on Thursday. This announcement coincides with Hiscox’s final broadcast, marking the end of her cross-Canada tour as the host after 20 years in the position.

Common, in an interview before the official announcement, shared his vision for the show, aiming to tackle the evolving television landscape and the growing sense of indifference towards news. He emphasized the importance of maintaining journalistic integrity while also infusing a sense of levity and engagement. Common expressed his desire to offer a diverse range of content to viewers, likening it to a buffet of news.

Originally from Winnipeg, Common initially aspired to be a nurse but found his calling in journalism after a chance encounter with Peter Mansbridge during his teenage years. His career at CBC began in 1999 at the London bureau, leading him to work in various locations such as Toronto, Fredericton, Winnipeg, and Regina. He later served as the European correspondent in Paris and the bureau chief and correspondent in New York City. Common has reported from over 90 countries and held hosting roles on programs like “World Report” and “Marketplace.”

Common acknowledged the challenges and excitement ahead in his new position, noting the shifting landscape of journalism within CBC and the media industry. He emphasized the importance of engaging audiences across different platforms beyond television.

Mark Ross, CBC News Network’s managing editor, mentioned that “Morning Live” would undergo changes while maintaining its commitment to live and breaking news. The show will adapt to incorporate Common’s strengths in audience engagement and storytelling, aiming for a more personal and authentic approach.

Hiscox, the outgoing host of CBC News Network’s flagship morning program, and her team received accolades, including Canadian Screen Awards and recognition from the Radio Television Digital News Association for their exceptional news coverage.

Common’s last day on “Metro Morning” will be on January 16, 2026, before he transitions to his full-time hosting role on “Morning Live” on February 2. Meanwhile, interim hosts will take over on “Morning Live,” and the search for a new host for “Metro Morning” is ongoing.
