Leith Fleming-Smith, a second-year student at Dalhousie University in 2012, was leading a group of first-year students on a campus tour when he recommended they attend a show by R&B funk band The Mellotones. This suggestion marked a turning point in his life as a music enthusiast. Now a prominent musician in Halifax, Fleming-Smith tours with artists like Matt Mays and Crash Test Dummies as a keyboardist. He is highly sought-after as both a session musician and a last-minute replacement for live performances. Fleming-Smith’s journey began during that fateful show at Dalhousie University, where he caught the attention of The Mellotones while energetically dancing in the audience.
The band’s saxophonist, Sean Weber, recognized Fleming-Smith from his visits to a local music store where he impressed with his keyboard skills. Weber persuaded the band to let Fleming-Smith join them on stage, leading to a pivotal moment in Fleming-Smith’s life. This opportunity sparked a series of events that launched his music career, allowing him to perform with various artists and bands.
Fleming-Smith’s dedication to music led him to juggle his studies, initially majoring in economics and later switching to history.
