In the ongoing WTA Finals, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her partner from New Zealand, Erin Routliffe, faced a defeat against Czechia’s Katerina Siniakova and American Taylor Townsend with a score of 6-4, 7-6 (3) on Tuesday. Despite being the No. 3 seeds, Dabrowski and Routliffe squandered a lead of 5-2 in the second set as Siniakova and Townsend staged a comeback.

Routliffe failed to close out the set at 5-3, allowing Townsend to secure a crucial break with a return winner. Townsend then sealed the victory with a service winner in the subsequent tiebreak. Notably, Dabrowski and Routliffe had previously triumphed over the same duo in the WTA Finals championship match last year and in this year’s U.S. Open final, bringing their head-to-head record to two wins each.

Reflecting on the match, Townsend expressed the challenges of facing the same opponents repeatedly and highlighted the team’s diligent preparation and execution of their game plan. The winning pair gained an advantage by breaking Dabrowski’s serve at a critical juncture when the first set was tied at 3-3, propelling them to control the match.

Townsend’s strong serving performance, coupled with Siniakova’s contributions, led to their flawless record of 2-0 in group play. In contrast, Dabrowski and Routliffe, now standing at 1-1, are set to compete against Timea Babos from Hungary and Luisa Stefani from Brazil in their final round-robin encounter.
