“Competition Bureau Probes Grocery Prices, Seeks Policy Solutions”

Share

The Competition Bureau is initiating an inquiry into the impact of competition within the food supply chain on the pricing of groceries for Canadian consumers. The bureau will focus on three main areas: production and processing, transportation and distribution, and retail pricing strategies to identify any potential issues.

This comprehensive analysis aims to identify areas where intervention may be necessary and suggest policy measures to enhance affordability. Jeanne Pratt, the interim commissioner of competition, emphasizes the significance of food costs to all Canadians and highlights how robust competition can help regulate prices. Industry stakeholders are encouraged to provide their input on the matter.

The current investigation will expand on the findings of the bureau’s 2023 study on the retail grocery market, which indicated that increased competition could lead to price reductions and foster innovation. The final report, slated for release next spring, will contain detailed insights and recommendations for policymakers on enhancing competition throughout the food supply chain.
