“Carney Hopes to Meet Chinese President at APEC Summit”

Ottawa is hopeful that Prime Minister Mark Carney will have a chance to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping during an upcoming summit in South Korea next week, as reported by a senior Canadian government official on Thursday. Carney, emphasizing the importance of renewing a comprehensive dialogue with Beijing following years of strained relations, is scheduled to attend an APEC summit in Seoul. He mentioned last week his anticipation of engaging with senior Chinese officials in the near future.

The senior government official stated during a briefing that they are anticipating a potential meeting and are making arrangements accordingly, expressing the desire for a possible encounter at APEC. In August, China imposed initial anti-dumping tariffs on Canadian canola imports, a year subsequent to Canada’s announcement of imposing a 100 percent tariff on imports of Chinese electric vehicles.

Last Friday, senior officials from Canada and China deliberated on the disputes involving canola and electric vehicles, as disclosed by Ottawa, without indicating any immediate resolution prospects.
