Canadian cyclist Derek Gee is embroiled in a legal battle seeking damages exceeding $48.6 million as he attempts to sever ties with the Israel-Premier Tech team. Gee remains steadfast in his decision, expressing his inability to continue racing for the team due to irreconcilable differences. In a social media post, the 28-year-old from Ottawa asserted his right to terminate the contract based on his inability to perform under the existing circumstances, citing strained relations with the team principal and significant concerns regarding safety and personal beliefs.

Israel-Premier Tech issued a brief statement acknowledging the contract termination case being under review by the UCI Arbitral Board, refraining from further comment. The team has been at the center of controversy, facing protests and withdrawals from races in Italy, amid ongoing tensions. In response, the team announced a rebranding effort and a shift away from its Israeli identity, with co-owner Sylvan Adams transitioning to a different role within the organization.

Gee’s legal representatives maintain the validity of his contract, while Gee emphasized his actions were not financially motivated and defended his decision to exercise his professional and personal rights. The dispute is now subject to UCI and legal deliberations.

The Israel-Premier Tech team, formerly known as the Cycling Academy team, has deep Canadian connections beyond Adams, with notable Canadian riders and team partners. Gee, initially part of the academy, was promoted to the WorldTour squad in May 2022.
