“Canada’s First Commercial Rocket Launch Pad to Host German Collaboration”

Maritime Launch Services Ltd., a company aiming to construct Canada’s inaugural commercial rocket launch pad in Nova Scotia, has reached an agreement with a German aerospace firm. This collaboration could potentially lead to orbital launches by 2028. The Halifax-based company disclosed that Germany’s Isar Aerospace intends to develop a specialized facility for its Spectrum rocket at the site near Canso, N.S., situated on the Eastern Shore.

The Spectrum rocket, a two-stage vehicle tailored for transporting small and medium satellites into space, is the centerpiece of this endeavor. Isar Aerospace, having already established its initial launch site in Norway, has set up a new Canadian subsidiary, Isar Aerospace Canada Inc.

Alexandre Dalloneau, Isar’s Vice President of Mission and Launch Operations, emphasized the significance of launch capacity in the realms of defense and intelligence. He highlighted the pivotal role that access to space data plays and underscored the mission to address existing bottlenecks in this domain.

Canada’s reliance on external support, particularly the United States, for launching space projects has been a longstanding practice. However, with the country’s emphasis on enhancing sovereign capabilities, including the establishment of space launch infrastructure, Canada is taking steps towards self-sufficiency in this strategic arena.

Maritime Launch’s initiative, known as Spaceport Nova Scotia, is geared towards providing launch infrastructure for commercial, civil, and defense clients. The project, expected to become Canada’s premier commercial launch pad upon its operational debut this year, will furnish Isar with the requisite launch facilities, an operations center, and ancillary services.

Stephen Matier, CEO of Maritime Launch, revealed that Isar plans to invest approximately $100 million as a tenant to prepare the launch pad. Construction is slated to commence this year, with space launches projected to begin by 2028, potentially escalating to 40 launches annually at the site by 2029. The ten-year agreement stipulates that Isar will remit $3.75 million US per fiscal quarter to Maritime Launch once the contractual obligations are fully in motion.

The deal signing between Matier and Isar took place in Turkey during a NATO defense industry summit. Matier disclosed that out of the four launch pads under development by his company, three have already been allocated to Isar, the federal government, and Montreal-based aerospace firm Reaction Dynamics. Discussions are ongoing with several potential clients for the remaining pad, with plans to reserve the development of a fifth pad for future considerations.

Furthermore, Canada’s recent decision to join NATO Starlift, a collaborative initiative aimed at establishing a space launch network for allied nations, aligns with Maritime Launch’s partnership with Isar. Matier emphasized the collaborative spirit among NATO-allied countries, highlighting the shared efforts to propel space-related activities forward.
