Corryn Brown maintained her winning streak at the PointsBet Invitational curling event by securing a 10-6 victory over Kate Cameron in Calgary on Friday. The team from Kamloops, B.C., now stands at 3-0, leading the women’s Pool B standings.
Despite a strong effort from Cameron’s rink from St. Adolphe, Man., who scored two points in the eighth end and stole one in the ninth, narrowing Brown’s lead to 7-6, Brown capitalized on the hammer in the final end to secure the win.
Following the loss to Brown, Cameron’s team fell to a 1-3 record after being defeated by Selena Sturmay of Edmonton (2-2) with a score of 6-4 in the later draw on Friday. Kerri Einarson from Gimli, Man., secured the second position in Pool B with a 2-1 record after an 11-4 victory over Sturmay.
In women’s Pool A matches, Kaitlyn Lawes from Winnipeg moved into the second spot with a 2-1 record following a convincing 10-3 win over Myla Plett from Edmonton (1-3).
Halifax’s Christina Black claimed her first victory with an 8-5 triumph over Beth Peterson from Winnipeg, with both teams now at 1-2. Rachel Homan from Ottawa leads Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record after a 12-4 victory over Myla Plett.
On the men’s side, Mike McEwen from Winnipeg defeated Rylan Kleiter from Saskatoon 7-2, maintaining a flawless 3-0 record in Pool B, while Kleiter dropped to 0-3. John Epping’s Toronto team secured an 8-5 win over Cal MacIsaac from Truro, N.S., improving to 3-0 and leading Pool A, with MacIsaac at 0-3. Brad Jacobs from Calgary rose to 2-1 in Pool A after an 8-5 win over Brad Gushue from St. John’s, Nfld., who now stands at 1-2.
Jordon McDonald from Winnipeg achieved a 10-5 victory over Matt Dunstone, tying for second place in Pool B with identical 2-1 records.
The final round-robin matches are set for Saturday, with the championship games scheduled for Sunday. The PointsBet Invitational features separate men’s and women’s competitions divided into two pools of five teams each, with the top team from each pool advancing to the championship games, offering a prize purse of $300,000.
