“Bouncer on Trial for Choking Incident Leading to Patron’s Death”

Share

A police officer in Halifax recounted in court on Monday how he had to physically intervene to stop a bouncer from choking an unconscious patron outside a downtown bar almost three years ago. Const. Jairus Lamphier testified at the trial of Alexander Pishori Levy, a former security officer at the Halifax Alehouse, who is facing charges of manslaughter and criminal negligence in the death of Ryan Sawyer on December 24, 2022.

Lamphier described arriving at the scene with his partner in response to a disturbance call and witnessing Levy holding Sawyer in a dangerous position on the ground. Sawyer appeared lifeless, with Levy applying pressure with a chokehold. Despite Lamphier’s repeated demands to release the chokehold, Levy seemed unresponsive until the officer physically intervened.

Following the incident, Sawyer was given CPR by officers and transported to the hospital, where he later passed away. Levy has maintained his innocence in the case. The trial also heard testimony from other officers and Sawyer’s twin brother, Kyle Sawyer, who was present the night of the fatal altercation.

Kyle Sawyer shared his account of the events leading up to his brother’s death, mentioning a confrontation at the bar that escalated into physical altercations involving the bouncers. He admitted to being intoxicated that night and disclosed details of his own encounter with the security staff.

The trial proceedings are ongoing, with further testimonies and evidence expected to be presented in court. The tragic incident has sparked discussions about the training and oversight of security personnel at drinking establishments, prompting calls for improved regulations in the industry.
