Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Chris Tanev was hospitalized following an on-ice incident during Saturday night’s 5-2 triumph against the Philadelphia Flyers in their home arena. Head coach Craig Berube stated that despite the collision with another player, Tanev had movement in all his limbs.
The incident occurred when Tanev collided with Philadelphia forward Matvei Michkov with 11:37 left in the game. While the impact was shoulder-to-shoulder, Tanev’s head jerked back upon contact, causing him to remain prone on the ice.
Medical staff promptly intervened, securing his head and neck before transferring him onto a stretcher and removing him from the ice. This game marked Tanev’s return after missing four games due to a concussion. Michkov received a minor penalty for interference during the play.
Berube mentioned post-game that Tanev was taken to a Philadelphia hospital for evaluation, confirming that he had movement in all his limbs. There was a possibility that Tanev might travel back to Toronto with the team.
“He’s showing signs of movement, and I believe he’ll be fine,” Berube expressed. “He’s undergoing tests, so we’ll have to wait and see. There’s a chance he might return home with us.”
Tanev contributed with an assist on Jake McCabe’s goal in the second period.
“It’s a distressing situation because he’s a vital part of our team,” commented Auston Matthews, who scored a goal during the game. “Whenever a stretcher is brought out, it’s a worrisome moment. Our thoughts are with him, and we’re hoping for his full recovery.”
