A new book detailing Jeremy Hansen’s groundbreaking voyage on the Artemis II mission is scheduled to be released this autumn. Titled “Earthrise: A Canadian Astronaut’s Journey into Deep Space,” the book will narrate Hansen’s experiences as the first Canadian to venture into deep space. John Larsen, a former senior military public affairs officer, is the author behind this project.
During the Artemis II mission, the crew, including Hansen and NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, set a record for the farthest distance traveled by humans from Earth. This mission, which marked the first crewed lunar expedition in half a century, garnered significant attention and enthusiasm from Canadians.
While the crew did not make a lunar landing, Hansen became the initial Canadian and non-American to journey to the moon. The mission also afforded the crew a glimpse of moon regions never before seen by human eyes.
The book “Earthrise” will delve into Hansen’s extensive training, the fulfillment of his astronaut dream, and the lunar mission that propelled him into deep space. Hansen expressed his astonishment at the journey, surpassing even his childhood fantasies of turning a treehouse into a spaceship.
Earlier this year, Hansen announced his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency after serving there for 17 years as an astronaut. Larsen, a writer and university instructor from Calgary, extensively interviewed Hansen for the book. Larsen described the book as a tale of personal triumph, national pride, and the pursuit of individual aspirations.
“Earthrise: A Canadian Astronaut’s Journey into Deep Space” is slated for publication on October 27, 2026, by HarperCollinsCanada.
