The students expressed frustration and disappointment at the news, as they were looking forward to celebrating like many other students. Calandra emphasized the importance of prom as a celebration of achievement and a significant rite of passage that can be conducted safely.
Calandra urged school boards to prioritize the interests of students and teachers in their decision-making process. He emphasized the need to allow students to enjoy their youth and indicated his willingness to step in if necessary to ensure students are put first.
Proposed legislation in the legislature would grant the minister expanded powers, potentially enabling intervention in school board matters, including prom-related decisions. The Durham District School Board did not provide an immediate response to requests for comments on the issue.
The principals of Brooklin, Brock, and Uxbridge high schools, all part of the Durham board, jointly communicated the cancellation of proms to parents, assuring them that alternative inclusive and meaningful year-end activities focusing on safety, dignity, and belonging would be organized in place of the traditional event.
