“Chapman’s Ice Cream Shifts Sourcing Away from U.S. Suppliers”

Chapman’s Ice Cream, a company based in Ontario, has announced a strategic shift in its ingredient sourcing, aiming to replace over 70% of its American suppliers with Canadian or non-U.S. sources amidst the ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States. The family-owned business has committed to maintaining its current prices for ice cream until March 2028.

CEO Ashley Chapman revealed that the initiative to seek alternatives to U.S. suppliers began in March 2025 following the imposition of tariffs by the Trump administration. Chapman emphasized the company’s proactive approach to this transition, stating that they have been diligently working towards this goal.

An essential aspect of this transition involves the production of sugar cones, a component crucial to their products. As no industrial sugar cone producers exist in Canada, Chapman’s partnered with Original Foods, a company based in Dunville, Ontario, to establish a Canadian cone line. Original Foods Limited will manufacture the sugar cones for Chapman’s, fostering local production and supporting the Canadian economy.

President Steeve Tremblay of Original Foods highlighted the significance of keeping manufacturing within Canada, especially during challenging trade circumstances. The agreement between the two companies has been solidified, with equipment procurement underway. However, delays have been experienced due to regulatory requirements unique to Canada, necessitating further review for efficiency.

In addition to sourcing sugar cones locally, Chapman’s is also shifting the production of wafers for its ice cream sandwiches to Canada and exploring international sources for ingredients like almonds from Australia and cherries from Chile. Chapman expressed optimism about the positive impact of these changes on both the business and the broader Canadian industry.

Chapman emphasized the long-term commitments made by the company, such as a five-year contract for Canadian-made cones, while also focusing on enhancing production efficiency to manage costs effectively. The company remains committed to using 100% Canadian dairy in its ice cream products, demonstrating a dedication to supporting domestic suppliers and ensuring product quality.
