President Donald Trump signed a bill on Wednesday that mandates his administration to release files concerning convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. This action came after facing pressure from his own political party, despite initially resisting such demands. Trump could have chosen to disclose these files months ago.
In a social media post announcing the signing of the bill, Trump mentioned that Democrats had used the Epstein issue to divert attention from what he called “AMAZING Victories.” The legislation requires the U.S. Justice Department to unveil all files and communications linked to Epstein, along with details about the investigation into his death in a federal prison in 2019, within 30 days.
While redactions are permitted concerning Epstein’s victims for ongoing federal investigations, the department is prohibited from withholding information due to factors such as embarrassment, reputational harm, or political sensitivity.
The Trump administration had been resisting the release, even as recently as last week, when a coalition of Democrats, a Republican critic of the president, and a few Trump loyalists pushed for the disclosure of these files. Despite efforts to block the release, Trump eventually made a U-turn over the weekend as congressional action seemed imminent, citing the distraction the Epstein matter posed to his agenda.
The House of Representatives passed the bill in a 427-1 vote, with Republican Rep. Clay Higgins being the only dissenting voice, expressing concerns over potential information release about innocent individuals. The Senate later unanimously approved the bill without a formal vote.
Trump has denied knowledge of Epstein’s crimes and claims to have severed ties with him long ago, even though it is known that they were previously acquainted. Some of Trump’s close allies had previously fueled conspiracy theories regarding the handling of the Epstein case, alleging a cover-up of potentially incriminating information in the files.
