However, his excitement turned into frustration as he and his wife faced lengthy delays at the Scotiabank Saddledome before the show began. Walia estimated the evening’s expenses at around $700, covering tickets, a babysitter, and food.
Attendees with floor and lower-level seats were confined to the concourse while the venue was still being set up, preventing them from accessing their seats promptly. The concert, scheduled for 8 p.m., was rescheduled to 9 p.m., with the performance eventually commencing at approximately 10:45 p.m.
Walia expressed disappointment at missing out on the full concert experience due to the delay. He highlighted the disorganization of the event and the safety concerns arising from the situation.
Similar incidents of high-profile concerts facing delays have been reported this summer. Jay-Z’s final show at Yankee Stadium began after midnight, and heavy rain forced Harry Styles to postpone a concert in Mexico City.
Entertainment lawyer Kurt Dahl emphasized that concert tickets do not guarantee much beyond a seat and a show, with limited rights for consumers in the event of delays. Artists often have the flexibility to change schedules, leading to unexpected delays.
Ashish Sharma from the Consumers Council of Canada noted the lack of statutory rights for customers in cases of concert delays. He suggested the need for more transparency from organizers when significant delays occur.
As consumers invest more in live entertainment, issues surrounding delayed events raise questions about the value of concert tickets. While Live Nation and Ticketmaster acknowledged the frustrations faced by fans, refunds or credits for delayed shows are at the discretion of event organizers.
Dahl pointed out that public pressure can sometimes be more effective in addressing delays than contractual terms. He emphasized the importance of artists maintaining their reputation by addressing delays promptly.
Despite the delays, Walia acknowledged the performers’ efforts but suggested that compensation or credits from ticket sellers could help offset the inconvenience caused by the delays.
