At the age of 66, Flavor Flav experienced the thrill of speed, reaching 106 kilometers per hour, sparking his interest in sliding sports. Known as a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, a founding member of Public Enemy, a reality show personality, and now an aspiring slider, Flavor Flav has joined the United States bobsled and skeleton program. USA Bobsled and Skeleton recently named Flav as their official hype man following his time spent with the team at the 2002 Olympic track in Utah. He intends to accompany the team to the Milan-Cortina Olympics in February.
Expressing his excitement, Flavor Flav stated, “The partnership is a blessing. It’s cooler than Cool Runnings. It’s Coolest Runnings.” During his visit, Flav engaged with both the bobsled and skeleton teams, taking a ride down the Park City track in a bobsled and later attempting skeleton, a high-speed sliding sport where athletes can reach speeds over 129 km/h. Initially, team officials suggested a lower starting point for safety, but Flav insisted on a more challenging start. Eventually, he achieved a speed of 108 km/h on his second run.
Flavor Flav’s adventurous spirit has been well-received by the team, with U.S. skeleton athlete Dan Barefoot praising him as “one of the coolest, most adventurous men” he has met. Despite Flav’s desire to start higher on the track, his skill and ease in the sport impressed many. His involvement in sports extends beyond sliding, having taken part in various events like the Mayo Bowl and supporting Olympians and athletes such as Veronica Fraley and the U.S. women’s water polo team at the Paris Olympics.
Flavor Flav’s presence has energized the team, fostering a sense of unity and confidence among its members. His enthusiasm and passion for sports have endeared him to the team, leading to personal connections and shared experiences, such as attending a Maroon 5 concert. Looking ahead, Flav plans to participate in a camp for sliders in Park City after the Olympics.
