The move by New York has sparked similar discussions in Canada, where the city of Hamilton, Ontario, considered but ultimately rejected a similar moratorium proposal. The rapid approval of data center projects without sufficient public consultation has raised concerns among experts like Anne Pasek, a Trent University associate professor specializing in data center studies.
Hyperscale data centers, which are crucial for cloud computing and not limited to AI applications, have drawn scrutiny due to their massive energy consumption. As the demand for artificial intelligence grows, companies have invested heavily in infrastructure, leading to environmental concerns about the industry’s carbon footprint and resource usage.
Data centers are known to consume significant amounts of energy and water, with estimates indicating a substantial increase in global energy consumption by 2030.
