Bell Canada has achieved a significant milestone in its satellite-to-mobile coverage initiative by completing the construction of a ground station in Quebec. The telecommunications company had announced its partnership with AST SpaceMobile last fall to launch space-based cellular service using low-earth orbit satellites.
Bell has commenced testing at the ground station facility, which links with AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation to merge its space-based cellular broadband network with Bell’s terrestrial network. This facility will be part of the Canadian infrastructure to support direct-to-device satellite service.
Integration testing, including text messaging, data connectivity, voice calls, and video calls on standard smartphones, has been successfully completed at the ground station. Further tests for video streaming, public alerts, and additional features are planned in the upcoming weeks.
The technology aims to provide connectivity to Bell customers in areas where traditional wireless networks are not accessible, such as northern communities and remote coastal regions.
Mark McDonald, Bell’s executive vice-president and chief technology officer, stated that the satellite ground infrastructure being developed will offer various direct-to-device capabilities to extend connectivity to remote and underserved areas. This, combined with Bell’s wireless network, will ensure customers remain connected regardless of their location.
Bell is targeting an early launch of its satellite coverage next year. Chris Ivory, chief commercial officer for AST SpaceMobile, assured customers of a seamless connectivity experience on their smartphones.
Rogers Communications Inc., a competitor of Bell, introduced its own satellite-to-mobile service in collaboration with SpaceX, providing connectivity in areas with poor cellular reception. Rogers has gradually expanded its services, offering text messaging initially to beta users and later adding WhatsApp voice and video calling capabilities. The company plans to enable traditional cellphone calls, including 911 services, later this year.
The diverse geography of Canada necessitates the extension of cellular broadband beyond traditional terrestrial infrastructure, as highlighted by Ivory in a news release.
Overall, these advancements in satellite-to-mobile technology aim to enhance connectivity for Canadians, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
