Roderick Sutherland has been convicted of manslaughter in relation to the 2020 killing of Megan Gallagher, as determined by a 12-member jury at Court of King’s Bench in Saskatoon after deliberating for two days. In addition to the manslaughter charge, Sutherland was also found guilty of unlawful confinement and desecrating human remains.

During the verdict announcement, Megan’s family and friends, seated in the front row, reacted with gasps, sobs, and embraces as the jury disclosed their decision to Justice John Morrall. Megan’s father, Brian Gallagher, expressed relief upon hearing the guilty verdicts, mentioning a sense of connection with their ancestors and a feeling of peace.

Reflecting on the long journey since Megan’s disappearance over five years ago, Brian shared the profound impact on their lives, emphasizing the lasting void caused by Megan’s absence. He described Megan as a vibrant, caring individual who always put others before herself.

The legal proceedings unfolded after Megan vanished under suspicious circumstances in September 2020, with law enforcement suspecting foul play soon after. Her remains were discovered two years later near the South Saskatchewan River, shedding light on the horrifying details of her demise – a brutal assault in a Saskatoon garage by a group of individuals.

Various individuals were implicated in Megan’s disappearance and death, with different outcomes for each. Roderick Sutherland, the latest to stand trial, now faces the consequences of his involvement, with a verdict of guilt handed down by the jury. His sentencing is set for December 19, with potential repercussions ranging from a provincial jail term to a lengthier sentence sought by the prosecution.
