The National Arts Centre Orchestra, based in Ottawa, is gearing up for its 100th tour, which includes performing in Eskasoni First Nation. Mi’kmaw artist Emma Stevens, who gained global recognition for her Mi’kmaw-language rendition of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” will be joining the ensemble for the performances.

Stevens expressed her excitement, emphasizing the opportunity to showcase Mi’kmaw culture and music. She highlighted the significance of preserving the Mi’kmaw language, noting her efforts to reconnect with it and create original music in Mi’kmaw.

The concert lineup will also feature Jeremy Dutcher, a Wolastoqiyik musician and two-time Polaris Music Prize winner. Dutcher, who hails from Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, praised the orchestra’s focus on celebrating music, language, and resilience.

Stevens, set to perform her Mi’kmaw version of “Blackbird” and an original song called “The Ballad of Shubenacadie,” expressed admiration for Dutcher and his artistry.
