Rohan Thompson, a temporary farm worker from Clarendon parish in Jamaica, was deeply concerned for his girlfriend Melissa, who resides in St. Catharines, Ontario, as a powerful Category 5 hurricane neared Jamaica earlier this week. Having been in Canada since April, Thompson is expected to return home in late November or early December.
The devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on Jamaica left Thompson sleepless and anxious, especially about his girlfriend’s safety. The hurricane made landfall near New Hope in St. Elizabeth, a crucial agricultural region for Jamaica, with destructive winds of 297 km/h. The aftermath of Melissa’s wrath included severe damage to structures in Black River, leaving many without roofs, downed power lines, and collapsed buildings.
Thompson, like many Jamaican seasonal workers in the Niagara region, expressed his heartbreak over the destruction in his homeland. He shared his anguish over the situation and his desperate attempts to reach his loved ones amidst the chaos caused by the hurricane.
Dale Merrill, a resident of Niagara-on-the-Lake with ties to Montego Bay, emphasized the need for support for Jamaican families affected by the storm. He highlighted the importance of helping those who come to Canada for work, as they play a vital role in the local farming industry.
Zepheniah James, a calypsonian from Montego Bay now based in Niagara Falls, recounted memories of Hurricane Gilbert from 1988, drawing parallels to the current devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa. He stressed the challenges faced by Jamaicans and urged people to offer assistance where possible.
In response to the crisis, residents of Niagara-on-the-Lake, like Jane Andres, mobilized relief efforts by collecting donations for Jamaican seasonal workers. The initiative aimed to provide essential supplies for the workers to take back to Jamaica, where recovery efforts were underway.
Despite challenges such as power outages and limited baggage allowances, efforts were made to support the affected communities in Jamaica. Air Canada’s response to the situation was noted, emphasizing the importance of donations to recognized relief organizations for effective assistance.
As the recovery process unfolds, caution was advised regarding donation requests to ensure contributions reach the intended recipients. Official channels and established relief organizations were recommended to avoid potential scams and ensure support reaches those in need.
