YouTube TV subscribers have lost access to Disney-owned channels like ABC and ESPN due to a failed content distribution agreement between the two parties. Additionally, other channels such as the Disney Channel, FX, and Nat Geo have disappeared from Google’s pay TV service.
In a recent blog post, Google’s pay TV platform mentioned that Disney had carried out its threat to suspend content during negotiations, potentially affecting coverage of various sports events like college football, NBA, NFL, and NHL games.
YouTube, the leading internet TV provider in the U.S. with over nine million subscribers, highlighted that Disney’s actions were part of a negotiation strategy to secure higher prices for its channels. The blackout of Disney content could benefit Disney’s streaming services like Hulu + Live TV and Fubo, according to YouTube.
Expressing disappointment over the situation, YouTube stated that affected subscribers would receive a $20 credit if Disney channels remain unavailable for an extended period. The base subscription cost for YouTube TV stands at $82.99 per month.
Disney, on the other hand, accused YouTube TV of not offering fair compensation for its channels, leading to the denial of content highly valued by subscribers, especially during a weekend hosting multiple Top 25 teams’ games.
Disney criticized Google for leveraging its massive market dominance to stifle competition and disrupt established distribution terms. The company emphasized its commitment to swiftly resolving the dispute for the benefit of viewers.
