Saab, the Swedish defense company, is exploring the possibility of setting up Gripen fighter jets assembly operations in Canada to meet the increasing demand from Ukraine swiftly. Saab’s CEO, Micael Johansson, mentioned in recent discussions with financial news outlets that the interest from Kyiv to acquire over 100 Gripen fighter jets would require doubling the company’s production capacity.

Reports from The Financial Times and Reuters indicate that Saab is actively seeking ways to expand its production capabilities, considering locations in Canada and other parts of Europe. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, speaking at the Canadian Aerospace Summit in Ottawa, expressed enthusiasm about the potential collaboration, emphasizing the positive impact on Canada’s aerospace sector and its alignment with European security interests.

Simon Carroll, the president of Saab Canada, highlighted the significance of the Canadian aerospace market in supporting the global demand surge. He emphasized the company’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with Canadian firms to bolster programs and products for both the domestic and international markets.

While the Gripen jets are currently assembled in Mississauga, Ontario, with final production stages in Sweden, discussions are ongoing regarding potential expansions and partnerships. Notably, a recent agreement between Sweden and Ukraine signals a potential export deal involving up to 150 Gripens to Ukraine, aligning with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s plan to enhance the country’s mixed fleet of fighter aircraft.

In a separate development, Canada is deliberating on the acquisition of 88 F-35 fighter jets, with Prime Minister Mark Carney ordering a review of the procurement deal amid global trade tensions. The review report, conducted by the Department of National Defence, is under consideration by the Prime Minister’s Office. Industry Minister Joly has not ruled out the possibility of a mixed fighter fleet, considering options such as a small F-35 fleet alongside a separate Gripen fleet.

The ongoing discussions and potential collaborations between Saab, Canada, and Ukraine underscore the evolving dynamics within the global defense and aerospace industries, with a focus on enhancing security capabilities and fostering economic partnerships.
