Stellantis and Microsoft have announced a five-year strategic partnership to collaborate on artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and engineering capabilities. This partnership comes as Stellantis aims to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving automotive industry dominated by technology-focused competitors.
The integration of software and data-driven services has become essential in the long-term strategies of automotive companies, especially with Chinese automakers ramping up efforts to attract customers both domestically and internationally.
Traditional automakers, facing challenges in software and tech development, are increasingly seeking partnerships with tech companies to enhance their capabilities and accelerate innovation. Stellantis’ Chief Engineering and Technology Officer, Ned Curic, emphasized the significance of the collaboration with Microsoft in advancing their AI initiatives.
Financial details of the partnership agreement were not disclosed. Stellantis has been leveraging tech partnerships to enhance its software capabilities and offer personalized experiences for drivers. The collaboration with Microsoft builds on their existing relationship, focusing on co-developing over 100 AI initiatives across various functions such as product development, predictive maintenance, testing, and digital feature deployment.
One of the key aspects of the partnership is the reinforcement of Stellantis’ global cyber defense center using AI-driven analytics to safeguard vehicles, customer data, and operations worldwide. This center will cover IT systems, connected vehicles, manufacturing sites, and digital products, incorporating security measures in mobile apps and in-vehicle services.
Additionally, Stellantis plans to modernize its IT infrastructure on Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform, aiming for a 60% reduction in its data center footprint by 2029 as part of the collaboration.
