In the supporting categories, Amy Madigan won best actress for her role in “Weapons,” while Sean Penn secured the supporting actor Oscar for his performance in “One Battle After Another,” marking his third Academy Award win.
Canadian talents shone brightly at the event, with Toronto director Maggie Kang receiving the Oscar for best animated feature for “KPop Demon Hunters.” Additionally, Canadian production designers from “Frankenstein,” Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau, celebrated their wins, along with other Canadian winners Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey in the makeup and hairstyling category for the same film.
“Notably, “One Battle After Another” not only clinched the best picture and best supporting actor awards but also earned Paul Thomas Anderson his inaugural wins for best adapted screenplay and directing. The film further triumphed in the editing and casting categories, the latter being a newly introduced Academy Award category after 24 years.
Furthermore, “Sinners” secured four awards, including Ryan Coogler’s win for best original screenplay and Autumn Durald Arkapaw’s victory for best cinematography, making her the first racialized woman to achieve this honor.
“Frankenstein,” filmed in Toronto, also had its share of success, bagging three awards at the prestigious ceremony. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the 98th Academy Awards showcased a diverse array of winners across various categories.
