The theft of crown jewels from the Louvre museum saw two suspects apprehended, as confirmed by the Paris prosecutor on Sunday. The arrests were executed by investigators on Saturday evening, with one of the detainees intercepted while attempting to board a flight out of the country. The first suspect was seized at Charles de Gaulle Airport around 10 p.m. on Saturday, while the second was apprehended later in the Seine-Saint-Denis suburb north of Paris.
The daring heist occurred on October 19, where thieves made away with eight valuable pieces of jewelry valued at around $143 million Cdn from the Louvre’s collection. This incident shed light on security vulnerabilities, as the culprits utilized a crane to breach an upstairs window during museum hours before escaping on motorcycles.
The arrest of the suspects, both in their 30s and originating from the Seine-Saint-Denis region, stirred discussions in France regarding a perceived national disgrace. According to reports from Le Parisien, the individuals were already on the radar of French law enforcement, with one of them set to travel to Algeria.
